All members must take our Safety Training prior to operating the machines.

Safety and education are two of our top priorities at Saratoga Joinery. All members must take our in-house Safety Training prior to operating any of our machines. This ensures a safe shop and provides high-quality training at no cost to our members.

Only members who intend to use our machines independently are required to take our Safety Training. Class participants are not required to go through Safety Training prior to taking a class.

Machine Safety Training Process

We want members of all experience levels at Saratoga Joinery. In order to accommodate everyone, we offer a Novice and Advanced track of our Safety Training.

NOTE: All new members must go through our New Member Orientation before registering for a Safety Training.

Novice

This training is paced for beginners who need a more in-depth education on the machines. The session entails a detailed overview of each machine followed by a supervised practical component. There are four two-hour novice courses available.

Advanced

This training is paced for members who are more experienced with the machines in the shop and just need a brief overview. The session entails a brief overview on the shop safety protocol for each machine. Every machine is covered in one two-hour session.

Machine Knowledgeable
machine use with supervision
Machine Qualified
independent machine use
Shop Certified
all machine qualifications earned

Each machine will be affixed with a card that has a different color on each side: yellow or green. When you are using that machine, you must flip the card to the color representing your safety designation. Machine Knowledgeable is yellow; Machine Qualified is green.

If you have been designated Machine Knowledgeable, you can be skilled up in the shop with the help of a Shop Steward when you are ready.

Novice

There are four Novice courses. Members only need to take the courses covering any machines they intend to use. However, if you would like to take them all, it is recommended that they be taken in the order represented.
